Candle magic is the art of using color therapy and the power of the flame to obtain your desired wishes. Here's all you need to know about it!

Candle Magic

Candle magic is a big part of my practice. It's simple, effective and easy. All you need is a candle, a lighter and your intent. Candle magic is one of the simplest forms of spell craft. In fact, you've probably practiced it before without even realizing it. Do or did you blow out candles on your birthday after making a wish? That's candle magic. You decided on your intent, and you put it out into the universe. This is the same concept only instead of making a wish, your making a declaration.

What candles should I use?

There are many candles out there, of all shapes and sizes, and it's hard to know which one to use and for what. If it's in a spell where the candle needs to burn completely, then I suggest tea lights or birthday candles. They're small, cheap and disposable. Other then that, the size and shape are up to you. Since it won't affect the spell, there is no right or wrong candle. Personally, I like medium sized candles as they are nicely sized and easy to carve.

What colors should I use?

Candle magic utilizes the color of the candles to empower the spell. Using the wrong color could negatively affect your spell, so you want to make sure your color corresponds to your intentions. Although, colors affect certain people in different ways- blue for me could mean something different from what it means to you- there is a baseline for color meanings in spell work.

Color Correspondences

  • Black- protection, banishing and repelling.

  • Brown- grounding, concentration, centering, justice and earth.

  • Blue- honesty, communication, truth, revealing, loyalty, intuition, and water.

  • Green- nurturing, caring, fertility, leadership, promotion, prosperity, and earth.

  • Grey- balance, equality, and understanding.

  • Pink- this color stands for love, friendship, and compassion.

  • Purple- this is used in spells to awaken the psychic mind, aid in restful sleep and strengthen empathetic feelings. This also represents spirit.

  • Red- love, lust, passion, creativity, courage, and fire.

  • White- purification, purity, and cleansing.

  • Yellow- this is a representation of the element air. Its also used in spells for healing, abundance, growth, and joy.

  • Orange- ambition, concentration, intellectual pursuits, success.

Each of these colors has more uses then I mentioned, and there are more colors then I mentioned, but these are the basics. Next, you'll want to set up your spell.

Decide On a Goal

What's your intention? You have to decide and focus on what you want this spell to do. If you're wanting to get a promotion at work, then focus on that while setting everything up. You can even hold the candle and charge the candle with your intent. All you have to do is envision your intent seeping into the candle.

Next, come up with a chant. You want to describe your intent in a few catchy lines. It doesn't have to rhyme, but I find it helps me more when it does. It gives it a ritualistic feel and helps me to remember.

For example; if I were to do a banishing spell, I would say something like this; You may cause no harm to me, as I will it so mote it is. Or; I halt thee from harming me, as I say it so shall it be.

It's short, to the point and is easy to remember.

Anything Else?

After that, you'll want to decide whether or not you're going to add anything else. Herbs, crystals, oils? If you want to then make sure the item corresponds to your goal. If your doing a romance spell then maybe add some rose petals or rose quartz! All these little things will add to the power of your spell.

But How Do I Incorporate These Things Into My Spell?

For herbs, you can burn them in the flame or set them around the base of the candle. For oils, you can anoint the candle (rub the oil along the base of the candle) or drip it into the wick before lighting (be careful with this method as essential oils are highly flammable. You don't want your flame soaring to high) ribbons you can tie to the candle, and you can place crystals around the base.

How Do I Know If The Spell Is Working?

You know it worked when what you asked for happens. Another way to be sure your spell is strong is to watch the flame. If the flame is tall and strong, then it means your spell is working. If your flame is tall and flickering then it means the spell is working, but it's not very stable. If the flame is short and flickering then it means your spell wasn't clear enough. If your spell isn't or doesn't work, just try again.

What Do I Do After The Spell?

It depends on how you performed it. If you burnt the candle down completely then just throw the remnants away or bury them. If you did the opposite, then you can either put the candle in a corresponding area (for promotions or prosperity put it near your workspace, for fertility or good sleep put it near your bed, etc), or cleanse the candle to rid it of residue energies and reuse it. If you used herbs then you can either bury them or burn them and if you used crystals then cleanse them.
