Hekate (Heck-Ah-tee) (Heck-Ah-tae)

Mighty Hekate, Queen of the Witches,

Blessed am I,

To call myself one of Your chosen.

Hekate is the Dark Goddess, the Hellenic Goddess, and the Crone. She is associated with the dead, ghosts, the dark of the moon, baneful herbs, curses, and black magic. As an ancient Goddess, she has served many roles in history.

It has been said that Zeus, son of Cronos, honored Hekate above all. Zeus allowed her to have a share of the earth and the sea. She also received the honor in the starry heaven, and by the deathless gods. Many people, including myself, consider her a Goddess of Witchcraft. Hekate is a guide along the path of witchery, and the universal Keeper of the Keys.

Hekate's symbols include the crossroads, keys, torches, the triple moon, the dark moon, the Crone, dogs, serpents, daggers, and Hekate's wheel (pictured below.)

She is said to hold power over wise judgment, the ruling of kings, victory, glory in battle, luck in games, the fertility of livestock, and the care of young children. As the Crone Goddess, she is wise, experienced, and authoritative. She has weathered the tear of time and reached maturity with strength. She gives generously to those who honor her but freely takes away from those who displease her.

Hekate is an extremely important household Goddess. She protects homes and their inhabitants from dangerous outside forces, including criminals, evil spirits, restless ghosts, and unkind energies.

If you desire to create an altar in her honor then set it up near the entrance of your home. If you want to honor her or call upon her for aid, be sure to leave offerings, like food or drink. Leave these offerings at a crossroads, on your household shrine, or near other liminal places at the dark of the moon.

Prayer to Hekate -

May the circle never be broken

May the earth always be whole

May the rattle ever be shaken

May Hekate live in my soul.
